Just some clippings of things I found interesting while blasting through feeds on Google. I'd suggest opening links in a new tab or window, otherwise they'll open within the embedded space below. This will update throughout the day:
Democracy activists in the tiny nation of Bahrain are finding Google Earth an invaluable tool in transmitting to the masses that they are truly and totally screwed by an exploitative royal ruling class. Using the comparatively high resolution satellite pictures in Google's mapping software, the government's opposition has been able to demonstrate just how much of the country -- 80 percent by some claims, as much as 90 percent by others -- has been set aside for opulent palaces, private marinas and golf courses.
The government responded by attempting to ban Google Earth (they gave up after three days). For their efforts, the government was repaid by greater subject awareness of the forbidden software and increased circulation via email of a PDF file showing those banned images.
Although the Google Earth site is now unblocked, the government still impedes access to over 25 sites critical of the royal family and will likely block even more ahead of next Saturday's parliamentary elections.
